Solosec is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections in the vagina in adult women.

Solosec belongs to a group of drugs called nitroimidazole derivatives. These work by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.

This medication comes in packets of granules and is taken once with or without food.

The packet of Solosec granules should be sprinkled on applesauce, yogurt, or pudding. Consume all of the mixture within 30 minutes of sprinkling. Do not chew, divide, or break granules. Swallow granules whole. After taking the mixture, you may drink a glass of water. Do not dissolve granules in any liquid.

Common side effects of Solosec include yeast infection, headache, and nausea.

Side Effects of Solosec

Serious side effects have been reported with Solosec. See the “Solosec Precautions” section.

Common side effects of Solosec include the following:

  • vaginal yeast infection including vaginal itching, vaginal odor, or white or yellowish discharge
  • headache
  • nausea
  • bitter or metallic taste in the mouth
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal (stomach) pain

Solosec Interactions

No drug interactions have been determined by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Solosec Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Solosec including the following:

  • a vaginal yeast infection. Solosec could cause a vaginal yeast infection requiring an antifungal medication. Tell your doctor if you have symptoms of yeast infection such as vaginal itching, vaginal odor, or white or yellowish vaginal discharge which may be lumpy or look like cottage cheese.
  • a potential risk of causing cancer with long-term use. Nitroimidazole derivatives have been shown to cause cancer in animal studies with long-term use. Long-term use should be avoided.

Do not take Solosec if you:

  • are allergic to Solosec or to any of its ingredients or other nitroimidazole derivatives like metronidazole or tinidazole.

Solosec Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Solosec, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Inform MD

Before taking Solosec, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Solosec or to any of its ingredients or other nitroimidazole derivatives like metronidazole or tinidazole
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Solosec and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Solosec. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Solosec and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Solosec crosses into human milk. Other nitroimidazole derivatives can cross into human milk. Because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, it is not recommended to breastfeed during treatment with Solosec and for 96 hours after taking Solosec.

Solosec Usage

Take Solosec exactly as prescribed.

Solosec comes in a packet of granules and is taken one time. Take the entire packet of Solosec at one time. Even though you only take Solosec one time, the medication will stay in your body for 4 days.

The entire packet of Solosec granules should be sprinkled on applesauce, yogurt, or pudding. Consume all of the mixture within 30 minutes of sprinkling. Do not chew, divide, or break granules. Swallow granules whole. After taking the mixture, you may drink a glass of water. Do not dissolve granules in any liquid.

Solosec Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The recommended dose of Solosec for the treatment of bacterial infection of the vagina is 1 packet (2 grams of granules) one time.

Solosec Overdose

If you take too much Solosec, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Other Requirements

  • Store Solosec at room temperature.
  • Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
