Keeping Kids Healthy During the School Year

Cover Coughs the Right Way

Tissues are an important tool to prevent the spread of illness, especially in confined areas such as a classroom. While many teachers will have their own tissue boxes, you can also send your child to school with a package of tissues to keep nearby. Tell your child to cough into the tissue and wash his hands or use hand sanitizer before touching other shared surfaces. When tissues aren’t immediately available, teach your child to cover his coughs and sneezes using his elbows — sometimes called a “vampire sneeze.” This helps prevent the spread of germs and keeps his hands relatively clean.
