Diagnosing Diabetes

A1C Test

The A1C test, also known as the glycated hemoglobin test, shows a patient’s average blood sugar level in the few months prior to testing. The A1C does this by measuring the percentage of blood sugar levels that are attached to hemoglobin (the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells). While this test is often used to diagnose diabetes, it’s more commonly used to test those who have already been diagnosed because it can give these patients an accurate picture of blood sugar control.
