Yes, you read right — chocolate can be good for your health. Daily consumption of dark chocolate made of at least 60 to 70 percent cocoa could help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Dark chocolate contains high levels of flavonoids, a type of antioxidant that help the body’s cells resist damage. These beneficial antioxidants are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, but the cocoa bean is particularly rich in them. One study, that looked at the long-term effects of dark chocolate on patients at risk for cardiovascular disease, found that daily consumption of dark chocolate may lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels — both of which can boost the risk of heart disease. If you have a sweet tooth, dark chocolate can be a heart-healthy snack. But don’t fall victim to the vending machine! Milk chocolate shares none of these health benefits, so check the cocoa content before indulging.
