Overactive Bladder Health Center

Overactive bladder is a condition in which the bladder releases urine out of the body at an inappropriate time. For the urinary system to work properly, the body's muscles and nerves must work in unison to hold liquids in the bladder and release them at the right time. Nerves carry signals from the bladder to the brain, letting the brain know when the bladder is full and needs to be emptied. These nerves also carry messages from the brain to the bladder, instructing the muscles to either tighten or release.

A problem with these nerves or messengers may affect the body's urinary control.

Overactive bladder involves damaged nerves, which send notifications at the wrong time to the bladder, causing the muscles to squeeze without warning or anticipation. The results may be frequent urination, the strong need to urinate or the accidental leakage of urine.
