Generics for Eliquis Approved

FDA approves generics for stroke and blood clot prevention medication Eliquis

(RxWiki News) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generics for Eliquis.

Initially approved in 2012, Eliquis is FDA-approved for the following:

  • To reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (heart rhythm problem)
  • To treat blood clots in the legs and lower the risk of blood clots happening again
  • To prevent blood clots in the legs after undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery

The generics of Eliquis are found under the name apixaban. These are the first generics approved for this type of blood thinner. Apixaban does not require repeated blood testing.

Generics offer people a less expensive option, increasing the drug's accessibility.

This medication will be dispensed with a Medication Guide, which includes instructions and safety information.

Serious risks tied to apixaban may include bleeding that can be life-threatening. This is a potential risk with all blood thinner medications.

The FDA granted the approvals of generic Eliquis to Micro Labs Limited and Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc.
