FDA Issues Warning Letter for Depression Med Norpramin
Sanofi-Aventis and the FDA have notified healthcare professionals of changes to the "Warnings" and "Overdosage" sections of the prescribing information for Norpramin (desipramine hydrochloride), a depression medication.
The new safety information states that patients should take extreme caution with this drug if they have a family history of sudden death, heart rhythm problems (cardiac dysrhythmias) and cardiac conduction disturbances. The information also warns that seizures have preceded cardiac dysrhythmias and death in some patients.
The letter updating health care professionals is available on the FDA's Web site.
