New Seizure Rx Gets Green Light

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new medication for seizures.

This new approval can be found under the name XCOPRI (cenobamate). The FDA approved it to treat adults with partial-onset seizures.

This medication is available in tablets and is given once a day. The dose is increased every two weeks, up to 200 mg a day. Some people may need higher doses.

Cenobamate was found to be safe and effective in two randomized clinical trials, according to the FDA. Common side effects included sleepiness, dizziness and headaches.

A potential serious side effect of XCOPRI includes an allergic reaction that may affect patients' organs. Like other medications used to treat seizures, this medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Anyone who is taking anti-seizure medications should be on the lookout for suicidal thoughts or behavior, any unusual changes in mood or worsening depression.

The FDA granted approval of XCOPRI to SK Life Science Inc.

Speak with your health care provider if you have any questions about seizures or the available treatment options.
