A POPPING noise in any joint is usually the sound of the tendons snapping back into place. But..you SHOULD be concerned if you hear a sudden loud pop when a joint gets pulled or twisted in a forceful way,usually during a fall. In this case, that pop you hear may actually be a tendon snapping or the cartilage tearing. You'd also feel intense pain as well as stiffness and swelling.
