Severe Acne Treatment: Oral Meds
January 5, 2012
Prescribed oral antibiotics fight acne by killing the common bacteria usually found on the skin, and decreasing inflammation. Your doctor may prescribe one of any number of common antibiotics, like Tetrocycline and Doxycycline, gradually reducing your dosage as your acne clears up. Patients who don't respond to antibiotics may be prescribed isotretinoin, a medication that is marketed both as a generic and under the brand name Accutane. This synthetic drug, which is taken in pill form, is one of the most effective forms of acne treatment. Isotretinoin reduces oil production, clears clogged pores, kills bacteria and soothes inflammation.
