Overview

A long-term autoimmune disorder, lupus may affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs. Also referred to as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), lupus makes the body's immune system attack healthy tissue. This disease causes long-term inflammation that may be chronic.

Lupus is more common in women than in men and may appear at any age. The most common age range for its onset is between 10 and 50 years old. African Americans and Asian Americans get the disorder more frequently compared to other races.
