Low Testosterone Health Center

Testosterone, or the male sex hormone, is first produced largely at the time of puberty in males. This production of testosterone can explain many of the obvious signs of teenage physical aging such as increased production of hair and the growth of sexual organs. Testosterone is made by the male's testes, or testicles, which are located inside the scrotum.

The testes are responsible for much of a man's reproductive activity, including the production of sperm and testosterone. However, the testes are not the only body part responsible for creating testosterone. The adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys, make a very tiny amount of testosterone.

As puberty brings on the effects of testosterone to help a teenage male sexually mature, older age can slowly allow the effects and production of the hormone to fade. This can cause erectile problems and pose further risk for additional health complications.
