Tooth Decay:

  • A dentist should be able to spot tooth decay by physically examining teeth and checking for cavities during a dental check-up.

Gum Disease:

  • Using a panoramic x-ray that captures an image of the entire mouth, a dentist will be able to check for gum and bone irregularities. Additionally, a dentist or dental hygienist will examine the mouth for any signs of bleeding gums and plaque build-up in the teeth.
  • A dentist may also refer patients to a periodontist, who is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.  A periodontist can provide information about further treatment options not offered by your dentist.

Dry Mouth:

  • To determine if you have dry mouth, speak to your dentist or health care provider about your medical history. Your dentist may also examine your mouth to determine the cause of your dry mouth.

Oral Cancer:

  • If you have symptoms that suggest oral cancer, visit your doctor or dentist for an oral examination. The exam consists of a close inspection by your dentist or dental hygienist of your face, neck, lips, and entire mouth for possible signs of cancer. If your health care provider does not find the cause of your symptoms, you may be referred to a specialist for further examinations.
