Your Healthy Home: To Filter or Not to Filter?
When we think of air pollution, we associate it with outdoor air. But what about pollution inside? Believe it or not, indoor air pollution is ranked a "high priority public health risk" by the United States Environmental Protection Agency! Of course, if you're one of the millions who suffer from indoor allergies and asthma, this is NOT news to you. So what can you do about the problem? Electrostatic and high-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA, filters can effectively remove many allergens from the air. They do so by forcing air through a mesh filter that traps harmful particles like pollen, pet dander, and dust mites. However, research studies disagree on whether or not filters give much added relief in a clean and well-ventilated home. That's because while many allergens and irritants are suspended in household air, there are far more resting on surfaces, like countertops. So even with an air filter, you can't cut out cleaning—but will help!
