Most traumatic brain injuries are accidental. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the causes of TBI as:
- Falls (35%)
- Motor vehicle accidents (17.3%)
- Struck By/Against events (16.5%, includes colliding with a moving or stationary object)
- Assaults (10%)
Eighteen percent of TBI's are in children aged 0-4; 22% were adults over age 75.
One of the leading causes of TBI is among active duty military personnel in war zones, who are suffering large amounts of TBI from blast injuries.
