Imodium

Imodium (generic: loperamide) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat diarrhea.

Imodium belongs to a group of drugs called anti-diarrheals, which work by slowing the muscles of the intestines to a normal pace and restoring balance in the digestive system.

This medication comes in tablet, caplet, and liquid forms, and is taken after each loose stool.

Imodium can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Imodium affects you.

Imodium chewable tablet: loperamide 2 mg

Imodium A-D caplet: loperamide 2 mg

Imodium A-D liquid: loperamide 1 mg (in each 7.5 mL)

Imodium A-D liquid Children's Mint Flavor: loperamide 1 mg (in each 7.5 mL)

Imodium chewable tablet: acesulfame potassium, basic polymethacrylate, cellulose acetate, confectioner's sugar, crospovidone, D&C yellow #10 aluminum lake, dextrose excipient, FD&C blue #1 aluminum lake, flavors, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, milk powder, sucralose

Imodium A-D caplet: colloidal silicon dioxide, dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate, D&C yellow no. 10 aluminum lake, FD&C blue no. 1 aluminum lake, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose

Imodium A-D liquid: carboxymethylcellulose sodium, citric acid, D&C yellow #10, FD&C blue #1, glycerin, flavor, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol, purified water, simethicone emulsion, sodium benzoate, sucralose, titanium dioxide, xanthan gum

Allergy alert: Do not use if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to any ingredients 

Do not use if you have bloody or black stool.

Consult a physician before use if you:

  • have a fever
  • have mucus in the stool
  • have a history of liver disease

This product may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery. Alcohol may intensify this effect.

Stop use and consult a physician if:

  • symptoms get worse
  • diarrhea last for more than 2 days
  • you get abdominal swelling or bulging, these may be signs of a serious condition


If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a healthcare professional.

Keep out of reach of children.

In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).

  • It is important to drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea.
  • To determine dose, if possible, use weight; otherwise dose medication by age.
  • Liquid formulations: shake well before use and use attached dosing cup to ensure accurate dosing.

Imodium chewable tablets

For adults and children 12 years and older:

  • Chew 2 caplets and take with 4–8oz of water after the first loose stool.
  • Chew 1 caplet and take with 4–8oz of water after each subsequent loose stool.
  • Do not take more than 4 caplets in 24 hours.

Imodium A-D caplet

For adults and children 12 years and older:

  • Take 2 tablets after the first loose stool.
  • Take 1 tablet after each subsequent loose stool.
  • Do not take more than 4 caplets in 24 hours.

Imodium A-D liquid

For adults and children 12 years and older:

  • 30 mL (6 tsp) after the first loose stool
  • 15 mL (3 tsp) after each subsequent loose stool, but no more than 60 mL (12 tsp) in 24 hours

Imodium A-D liquid Children's Mint Flavor:

  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to help prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea.
  • Find right dose. If possible, use weight to dose; otherwise use age.
  • Shake well before using.
  • Only use attached measuring cup to dose product.

For adults and children 12 years and over:

  • Take 30 mL (6 tsp) after the first loose stool.
  • Take 15 mL (3 tsp) after each subsequent loose stool, but no more than 60 mL (12 tsp) in 24 hours.

Imodium chewable tablets:

  • For children 9-11 years (60-95 lbs):
    • Chew 2 tablets after the first loose stool.
    • Chew 1 tablet after each subsequent loose stool.
    • Do not take more than 4 tablets in 24 hours.
  • For children 6-8 years (48-59 lbs):
    • Chew 1 tablet after the first loose stool.
    • Chew 1/2 tablet after each subsequent loose stool.
    • Do not take more than 3 tablets in 24 hours.
  • For children under 6 years (up to 47 lbs), ask a doctor before use.

Imodium A-D caplets:

  • For children 9-11 years (60-95 lbs):
    • Take 1 caplet after the first loose stool.
    • Take 1/2 caplet after each subsequent loose stool.
    • Do not take more than 3 caplets in 24 hours.
  • For children 6-8 years (48-59 lbs):
    • Take 1 caplet after the first loose stool.
    • Take 1/2 caplet after each subsequent loose stool.
    • Do not take more than 2 caplets in 24 hours.
  • For children under 6 years (up to 47 lbs), ask a doctor before use.

Imodium A-D liquid:

  • For children 9-11 years (60-95 lbs):

    • Do not take more than 30 mL (6 tsp) in 24 hours.

Imodium chewable tablets:

  • contains milk
  • store at room temperature between 20-25° C (68-77° F)
  • do not use if carton is open or if printed foil seal under bottle cap is open or torn
  • see bottom panel for lot number and expiration date

Imodium A-D caplet:

  • each caplet contains: calcium 10 mg
  • store at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F)
  • do not use if carton or blister unit is open or torn
  • see side panel for lot number and expiration date

Imodium A-D liquid:

  • each 30 mL (6 tsp) contains: sodium 16 mg
  • store at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F)
  • do not use if printed inner or outer neckband is broken or missing
  • see side panel for lot number and expiration date

Imodium A-D liquid Children's Mint Flavor:

  • each 30 ml (6 tsp) contains: sodium 10 mg
  • store at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F)
