BuTrans is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe, chronic, around-the-clock pain that will last a long period of time. BuTrans belongs to a group of drugs called opioid partial agonist-antagonists, which help to relieve pain by binding to certain opioid receptors in the body.
This medication comes in skin patch form and is usually applied for a week at a time.
Some of the common side effects of BuTrans include constipation, nausea, and headache. BuTrans can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how BuTrans will affect you. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
WARNING: ADDICTION, ABUSE, and MISUSE; LIFE-THREATENING RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION; ACCIDENTAL EXPOSURE; and NEONATAL OPIOID WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME
- BUTRANS exposes users to risks of addiction, abuse, and misuse, which can lead to overdose and death. Assess each patient’s risk before prescribing, and monitor for development of these behaviors or conditions.
- Serious, life-threatening or fatal respiratory depression may occur. Monitor closely, especially upon initiation or following a dose increase. Instruct patients on proper administration of BUTRANS to reduce the risk.
- Accidental exposure to BUTRANS, especially in children, can result in fatal overdose of buprenorphine.
- Prolonged use of BUTRANS during pregnancy can result in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, which may be life-threatening if not recognized and treated. If opioid use is required for a prolonged period in a pregnant woman, advise the patient of the risk of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome and ensure that appropriate treatment will be available.
