The Best Treatments for Anorexia

Treating Anorexia: mandometer or treatment as usual?

(RxWiki News) If you’ve ever suffered from an eating disorder, you know how confusing it can be to find the right treatment for you.  When there are so many treatment options to choose from, matching the right one to your needs is essential.

That’s why scientists decided to compare the top rated anorexia treatment, Mandometer, and the treatments that doctors have been using for some time, which include changing the way you view food and your body so that it's more positive.

What they found was that although new methods such as the Mandometer method offer a new way of looking at anorexia, the treatment wasn’t as effective as treatment as usual (TAU).  Although Mandometer is a type of treatment that was developed in order to teach sufferers how to recognize normal hunger, Mandometer treatment has a lower success rate when compared to TAU.

In a study that compared the data of people who used Mandometer versus people who used TAU, only 63% of the Mandometer group reached normal weight as compared to 85% of the TAU group. The same study also showed that more people were in treatment longer and had relapsed after using the Mandometer treatment as opposed to the TAU treatment during the two years after treatment began.

This study was sponsored by the Netherlands Organization of Health Research and Development and was published by the International Journal of Eating Disorders in March 2012.
