(RxWiki News) She was trying for the third time to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Instead, Giuliana Rancic - host of E! News - is being treated for breast cancer.

Her doctor suggested the 36-year-old Rancic have a mammogram out of an abundance of caution before having the in vitro fertilization procedure. That's when the early stage cancer was discovered.

Making the announcement on the Today Show, she said, "It's been a shock."

"Giuliana Rancic has breast cancer."

Rancic, the co-host of E! News and Style Network host, has been very open about her failed attempts to get pregnant.

She will have surgery later this week followed by six weeks of radiation to treat the cancer.

The young woman, who said she had not planned to have her first mammogram until age 40 - which is the recommended age to begin screening - won't give up on her dreams of motherhood.

Rancic said after making the announcement, "I still want this baby ... because this baby has saved my life."
