The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has cited estimates that up to 20% of the adult population in the United States has symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or over 45 million people. Also known as spastic colon, IBS causes chronic abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, and changes in bowel habits without any medically detectable pathology or cause. It may cause urgent diarrhea (IBS-D), constipation (IBS-C) or alternate between the two (IBS-A).
