Purpose of Colace

Colace is an over-the-counter medication used to treat constipation. It generally produces a bowel movement in 12 to 72 hours.

Active Ingredients

Colace Capsules: docusate sodium 50 mg and 100 mg capsules

Colace Syrup: docusate sodium 60 mg in 15 mL

Inactive Ingredients

Colace 50 mg capsule: D&C Red No. 33, FD&C Red No. 40, gelatin, glycerin, PEG 400, propylene glycol, sorbitol

Colace 100 mg capsule: D&C Red No. 33, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 6, gelatin, glycerin, PEG 400, propylene glycol, sorbitol, titanium dioxide

Colace Syrup: gelatin, glycerin, polyethylene glycol 400, sorbitol, propylene glycol, methylparaben, titanium dioxide, FD&C Red No. 40, D&C Red No. 33, propylparaben, FD&C Yellow No. 6.

Colace FDA Warning

Do not use if you are presently taking mineral oil, unless told to do so by a doctor.

Ask a doctor before use if you have:

  • stomach pain, nausea or vomiting
  • a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts more than 2 weeks.

Stop use and ask a doctor if:

  • you have rectal bleeding or no bowel movement after using this product. These could be signs of a serious condition.
  • you need to use a laxative for more than 1 week.

If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away (1-800-222-1222).

 

 

Directions

Colace 50 mg capsules:

For adults and children 12 years and over, take 1-6 capsules daily. Take only by mouth. Doses may be taken as a single daily dose or in divided doses.

Colace 100 mg capsules:

For adults and children 12 years and over, take 1-3 capsules daily. Take only by mouth. Doses may be taken as a single daily dose or in divided doses.

Colace Syrup:

  • Doses must be given in a 6-8 oz glass of milk or fruit juice, to prevent throat irritation.
  • Take only by mouth. Doses may be taken as a single daily dose or in divided doses.
  • Adults and children 12 years of age and older: 1 to 6 tablespoonfuls daily, or as directed by a doctor.

Pediatric Use

Colace 50 mg capsules:

For children 2 to under 12 years of age, take 1-3 capsules daily. Take only by mouth. Doses may be taken as a single daily dose or in divided doses.

For children under 2 years of age, ask your doctor before taking Colace.

Colace 100 mg capsules:

For children 2 to under 12 years of age, take 1 capsule daily. Take only by mouth.

For children under 2 years of age, ask your doctor before taking Colace.

Colace Syrup:

Other Information About Colace

  • Each tablet contains: sodium 3 mg (in 50 mg Colace capsules) or 5 mg (in 100 mg Colace capsules).
  • Store at room temperature between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).
  • Keep tightly closed.
  • Generally produces a bowel movement in 12 to 72 hours.
