Frequently Asked Questions:

Can a food allergy be outgrown?

  • Often, children will outgrow allergies to egg, milk and soy developed early in life. However, allergies developed as an adult typically do not go away. Additionally, serious allergies to peanuts and nuts are usually not outgrown.

How is a food allergy differentiated from a food intolerance or food poisoning if all three produce similar symptoms?

  • Pay close attention to your symptoms, the more serious will indicate if it is a food allergy. Additionally, any reaction to a food product should be followed up with a trip to your doctor. By taking a detailed medical history and asking questions based on possible causes and symptoms, your doctor should be able to determine if it is a food allergy or a differing reaction. If you want to investigate before or after seeing your doctor, try keeping a Diet Diary keeping track of what you eat and drink each day. This may help you determine what foods correlate to when you become sick.

Why aren't more people allergic to pollen inside of flowers?

  • While it may seem big, bright flowers would be the common culprit of spring time allergies, that is not the case. Light and dry pollen found in trees, weeds and grass is more easily carried by the wind allowing it to travel farther and affect more people. Large flowers have pollen that is more waxy and heavy making it difficult for it to travel far. Often, people who develop allergies to flowers are actually florists and gardeners who are around them for long periods of time.
